This afternoon I went to brunch with a friend at a midtown spot called Rue 57. Allegedly it is called “Rude 57” because of its rude waitstaff but I didn’t experience anything less that sheer courtesy.

During my time at the Rue, I went to the restroom to wash the city grime off of my hands and it dawned on me…Who made up the edict that you must tip a restroom attendant? Why do they exist?

It’s not that I don’t believe in tipping people, I do. But I also believe in tipping people for actual service, hard eyebrow furrowing work. Why does a restroom attendant who hands me a paper towel deserve a tip? I just don’t get it.

The long story short is that I did give the woman a $1 tip because I felt obligated to, but I am further considering the validity of giving my hard-earned money to someone who barely lifts a finger.

I hope I don’t sound like a jerk, but it’s just on my mind. Can someone explain to me why these jobs exist.

  1. Not only to hand you a paper towel, but to provide a safe/populated environment?

^^ just guessing here, as I’ve never seen a bathroom attendant in my life.

  2. i think ive tip a bathroom attendant only once or twice in my life. im judgin g them, but i think they have the stupedest job in america. i can think of a few things that id choose to do before stadning in a public bathroom watching people relieve themselves in a variety of ways. i too can think of no reason to tip these people.

i understand that theyre there to make sure the bathroom experience is more pleasant than usual. they have different soaps, lotions, colognes, candy. ive even seen some have a basket of contraceptive devices. but even if i needed any of that stuff, why would i get it from the mens room?

anyway, when we see these bathroom attendants, maybe we should give them referreals for job training. they need to get some marketable skills.

  3. Jay that’s a great idea re: giving the attendants referrals for job training. They need something better to do that will at least afford them the opportunity to make more money. I wonder how much they make in a night of handing out paper towels and breath mints?
